New Zealand Development Scholarship Program 2016

The New Zealand Aid Program provides scholarships to qualified applicants from African countries who are highly motivated to make a difference in their lives.
New Zealand Development Scholarships applications can be done online from 1st February 2016.

The deadline for applications is on 30th April 2016.

Eligible countries in Africa include: Algeria, Angola, Botswana, Cameroon, Djibouti, Egypt, Ethiopia, Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

Qualification types

New Zealand Development Scholarships are obtainable for the following qualifications:

  • Postgraduate Certificate (6 months)
  • Postgraduate Diploma (1 year)
  • Masters Degree (1 – 2 years)
  • PhD (up to 3.5 years)


Applicants must satisfy all the eligibility criteria for the scholarship including:

  • Be at least 18 years of age at the time of the start of your scholarship.
  • Be a citizen of the nation from which you are applying for a scholarship and have attained residency in that country for at least the last two years.
  • Consent to come back to your home nation for at least two years upon completion of the scholarship.


Preference shall be granted to applicants who show strength in academic ability, leadership, and a dedication to the development of their home country.
Priority is also granted to candidates who are of 40 years of age or lower at the time of beginning their scholarship.
Preference will be given to applicants who request to study in academic fields associated with one or more of the following:

Agriculture development

  • Agri-business management, agricultural economics, agricultural systems and management, rural development, domestic supply chains and distribution, Natural Resource and Environmental Management
  • Biology, vegetable production, livestock/animal husbandry, crop management, sericulture (silk production), forestry, fisheries, aquaculture, agricultural pest management
  • Phytosanitary, bio-security, biotechnology, agricultural trade,
  • Food production, food sciences/technology, post-harvest processing, food storage and packaging, food safety

Renewable energy

  • Geothermal, solar, hydro engineering and wind energy, renewable energy distribution systems
